Do not cross water to reach a control

A water shutoff does not make wet wiring safe. A stopped drip also does not make a sagging ceiling stable. Do not press on swollen surfaces, remove ceiling panels, or stand beneath an area that appears compromised to take a photograph.
Treat sewage and unknown floodwater as exposure concerns

Report from a safe place
If you suspect a gas leak or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, leave and use the relevant emergency or utility route from a safe location. Do not stay beside the equipment to read its model or search for a leak. Follow responders' instructions about returning.
Once the immediate danger is addressed, describe the plumbing condition and access limits to the appropriate provider. Use active water leak or sewage backup for that next conversation. A safe incomplete report is better than a detailed report gathered by entering a hazardous area.
